With Mozart's birthplace and the Mozart residence, two of Salzburg's most important sights belong to the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg.

The house at Getreidegasse 9, where Wolfgang Amadé Mozart was born on January 27, 1759, has been owned by the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg since 1917. Today it is one of the most visited museums in the world. Nowhere else can Wolfgang Amadé Mozart and his music be experienced as vividly as here. On three floors, visitors learn details about Mozart's life circumstances: how he grew up, his relationship with his family, his passion for opera and more. In addition to original portraits and documents, there are also special rarities such as mementos from Mozart's possessions, his childhood violin and clavichord, as well as what is probably the most famous Mozart portrait, painted two years before his death by his brother-in-law Josef Lange.

Wolfgang Amadé lived in the former "Tanzmeisterhaus", now the Mozart residence at Makartplatz 8, until the end of 1780, his final departure from Salzburg. The biographies of the family members and the authentic impressions of everyday family life fill the house with their spirit to this day and allow visitors to experience Mozart anew. In the spacious rooms, original documents and portraits document Mozart's compositional work during his Salzburg years and the social environment of the Mozart family. Special attractions are Mozart's original fortepiano and the famous family portrait in the "Tanzmeistersaal".
The museum was partially destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in its original state in 1996.
