Bavarian Gmain - the "Bavarian Gmain"

Already the double name suggests that there could also be an "Austrian Gmain", only it is called "Großgmain".

The vernacular names both places together "Auf der Gmain" and indeed this mountain range above the Reichenhaller valley basin, the old Celtic "Muona", was an ancient settlement unit. In the course of a long and eventful history, all the essential facilities of a modern community developed. The special charm and also an obligation consists in the preservation of the common historical heritage - with all independence developed in the meantime.

Hiking center at the foot of the Latten Mountains

A typical landmark for the two communities is the sleeping witch, a peculiarly shaped mountain massif around which many sagas and legends entwine. In the surrounding area there are numerous easy hiking trails as well as challenging alpine climbs.
